Carcinomas are identified histologically on the basis of invasiveness and the changes that indicate anaplasia, i.e., loss of polarity of nuclei, loss of orderly maturation of cells, variation in the size and shape of cells, hyperchromatism of nuclei, and increase in the nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio.
